Archaeological site.
Details of Site Location: The convergence of Old and New Burnhamthorpe Roads on the old Merton Farm property, east of Kipling.
Boundary History: The extent of the site is unclear, as it has been destroyed by construction.
Current Use of Property: Townhouses.
Historical Description: The area is on the west side of Mimico Creek and north of Dundas Street West. The site was identified by Konrad and was classified as Woodland in period, Iroquoian in culture of the Black Creek type. Konrad believed that the site was from 3 to 6 acres in extent. Some collections of the historic period were made by a local citizen in the 1950s and 1960s, in the knowledge that development of the area would take place.
Relative Importance: Konrad ranked the site 5/5 in importance and 5/5 threatened.
Planning Implications: The area should be flagged for further archaeological investigation and for protection of what may remain. The route of Mimico Creek adds greatly to the possibility of finding material, but only where it has not been substantially disturbed. It is thought that the site may be larger than Konrad’s estimate.
